Crossing a River

If a man is crossing a river
And an empty boat collides
With his own skiff,

Even though he may be a bad-tempered man
He will not become very angry.
But if he sees a man in the boat,

He will shout at him to steer clear.

If the shout is not heard, he will shout again,

And yet again, and begin cursing.
And all because there is somebody in the boat.

Yet if the boat were empty,

He would not be shouting, and not angry.

If you can empty your own boat
Crossing the river of the world,
No one will oppose you,
No one will seek to harm you.

RABBIT IN THE MOON

The flooding from hurricane Stan has devastated so many Mayan villages in Southern Mexico. Hardest hit have been the states of Chiapas, Veracruz, Oaxaca, Puebla, Hidalgo, Guerrero, Jalisco and Tabasco, and the Central American countries of Honduras, and Guatamala, mostly Mayan villages already negatively impacted by poverty.

This site, RABBIT IN THE MOON, celebrates the Glory Days of the Mayan Empire, with information cross spectrum on such things as the Mayan Calendar and Date Calculator, Culture, Games and Hieroglyphic Writeing, even write your name in hieroglyphics. Mayan architecture models and Palace Murals.

Why hasn't someone thought of this before. Clickless mousing. A new way to navagate a page without clicking on your mouse. Whats next? No mouse, your eye is the cursor, and you "think click"? Click it out here...

THE RCC'S OWN KKK???

Or it's Mafia.
Just wondering.
On this day in 1928, Josemaria Escriva founded Opus Dei, (Latin for "Work of God"), a worldwide organization of lay members of the Roman Catholic Church, Paul ll making it a part of the Catholic Churich in 1982. However, controversy surrounds the organization.

SURRENDER AND PRAYER

Someone posted an instructive homily on a group website a day or so ago following a subject thread of "how do you surrender?" the body of the questioning post was as follows:

"Hi all. A quick question - how do you surrender? What does surrender mean to you? Is it accepting the will of God in all that happens to us? If so, why do we still pray to God if we have accepted everything as being the will of God? Sorry for the strange question."

The thread reply's were many and varied, but one reply in particular caught my attention, it's heading was:

“This says it all re: Merlin Carothers Ministry on Surrender for Dummies.” and we were presented with a story of many prayers proffered, as here... The chaplain got down and he said, Now Lord, we've got to stop fooling
around. I mean we've got to tell this man something. He's got to know
something. " And then He said, "But anyway, thank you for them just
exactly as they are. "

The Lord said, "Finally! Finally, Merlin, that's what I've been trying
to get across to you all along. You can't help them." That's right
Lord I can't help them. But the Lord said, " I can. Now when they come
in this time, sit down, fold your hands, open your mouth, and I'll
tell them." And Merlin said, "Oh praise the Lord, that's what I wanted
Lord." well, read the short story

Scroll down about 28 paragraphs, or halfway through the document to the paragraph beginning, "
I want to tell this story because it is so important...

HERE...

Now, these are my thoughts on the Merlin Carothers story...

And you know, I wonder if this teaching story, so inspiring on so many levels, might be about just about one man, the advancement of Merlin Carothers, whom we are informed, by Merlin Carothers no less, as a matter of course speaks with God, and in turn, is spoken too by God, we assume from this and his other stories, on a regular basis.

These conversations with God are certainly Biblically canonical for any Christian, commonplace, occurring repeatedly and often, and absolutely necessary for the establishment of the Jewish race, the Jewish religion and the Jewish nation as recorded so importantly and so often in the Tanakh, and the direct instruction from Allah to the Prophet Mohammad which established the Nation of Islam as proscribed by the Qur’an.
These days, God is also speaking to quite a few of the Protestant fundamental Christian Ministers, particularly those on the extreme right. And often this conversation is rather self serving for the recipient, or the recipients group, or rather damning to certain societal groups, gays and women seeming to often be the brunt of God’s ire as He goes his way punishing many innocents for the sins of the few, according to these modern day recipients of God’s private word. I remember one Minister who was in great need of money for his various projects and God told him that if the members of his rather large TV audience didn’t cough up the money God would take his life. He appeared on his television show, passed on God's message to his flock, and the "body of Christ" responded by sending millions to the Godly shakedown and the minister's life was spared.

God taking our personal phone calls directly somehow makes me uneasy. Large room for abuse there, custom made for despots and we’re seeing this play out in the current religious wars in the Middle East. Our own President it seems is chatted up by God occasionally as evidenced by "...the former Palestinian foreign minister Nabil Shaath says Mr Bush told him and Mahmoud Abbas, former prime minister and now Palestinian President: 'I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, 'George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan.' And I did, and then God would tell me, 'George go and end the tyranny in Iraq,' and I did.” And another source...Shaath says, “President Bush said to all of us: ‘I’m driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, ‘George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan’.
“And now, again, I feel God’s words coming to me, ‘Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East’. And by God I’m gonna do it’,” Shaath quotes him as saying.

As I’m writing this, my on screen news ticker just upped the numbers on both the South Asia earthquake, 20,000 dead, estimated 3 million homeless in Pakistan alone, and higher numbers to come, and the Guatemala storm deaths, 1,500 from one Mayan village alone, not to mention the other devastations to humanity this year, the tsunami, New Orleans, the religious massacres in Iraq and Northern Africa, and the millions tangentially effected, the physically injured for life, the millions deeply grieving from loss of family and loved ones, and the astounding psychological havoc on both adults and a children.

I think my discomfort with personal prayer comes from time being spent by God on Merlin and his need for miracles such as those from the above story when that time might be better spent elsewhere. But then the ways of God are mysterious and acted out behind a curtain for most of us lesser mortals although apparently not to Merlin.

Today being Sunday, the Football games will be on across America, and often we'll see a look up and point up to Our Father In Heaven after the hero has scored his 6 points, letting the millions focused on him know that the glory of those 6 points belong to God and are the work of God and God's answer to the hero’s prayers and a testament to their special relationship. Ah the humility.

Merlin Magic indeed.

And it’s so easy to slip into this thinking so exemplified in this Merlin story and the many others he’s sure to tell. The need to present ourselves to an audience as the hero. Or, to elicit a powerful ally in the horror of this being in the world. Who’s theory in the First Noble Truth was the one about suffering?

When I was a child my Mother would kneel beside the bed with me before sleep and I would tell God my fears and my desires. And you know at a later date my Mother would always remind me of the boogie bears God had vanquished, and the desires and wishes God had granted. Yet looking back, these were everyday happenings which simply would turn out well, no more no less than for my playmate across the street who didn’t pray. Yet according to the adults, all those benifician happenings were prayers God answered. Very heady and powerful stuff for an impressionable child. O Lord wont you buy me. God the protecting Father, and God the beneficent ever providing Friend. Chogyam Trungpa’s clear view of 20th century Western Christianity right on target.

The self absorption of a Child, a self referential child who still appears periodically when as an adult I’m frightened or confused, or pained, to pray. However, now, it’s so much more helpful to remember the 1 Corinthians 13 bit about “understanding as a child, and putting things from childhood behind,” and when I do remember and realize that stress and fear has caused the child from the past to reappear, this adult has learned to attempt to focus on the breath, feeling the breath touching the upper lip just under the nose, to attempt to empty this grasping, controlling, knowing mind, this creator of lies trapped in the carcass of the past or the mad delusions of the future and that attempt is the closest to surrender and to a TRUE prayer this human may ever know.

I don’t mean to be harsh on Merlin, we’re all are where we are, I’m Merlin and Merlin is everyman, and Heaven knows emptying may be the off base and Merlin may have the true skinny and I may be missing blessing and powers beyond knowing and crossing a goal line before millions and pointing to God may be a highest worshipful statement. But there’s just something about this story by Merlin that makes me feel askew and this human has learned through many years of mistakes to heed the message of askew.

His story here...
ACT GREAT

What is the key
To untie the knot of your mind’s suffering?

What
Is the esoteric secret
To slay the crazed one whom each of us
Did wed

And who can ruin
Our heart’s and eye’s exquisite tender
Landscape?

Hafiz has found
Two emerald words that
Restored
Me

That I now cling to as I would sacred
Tresses of my Beloved’s
Hair:

Act great.
My dear, always act great.

What is the key
To untie the knot of the mind’s suffering? Benevolent thought, sound
And movement.

~ Hafiz ~ (The Gift – versions of Hafiz by Daniel Ladinsky)

FALLING UPON HARD TIMES...

"The man who, being really on the Way, falls upon hard times in the world will not, as a consequence, turn to that friend who offers him refuge and comfort and encourages his old self to survive. Rather, he will seek out someone who will faithfully and inexorably help him to risk himself, so that he may endure the suffering and pass courageously through it, thus making of it a "raft that leads to the far shore." Only to the extent that man exposes himself over and over again to annihilation, can that which is indestructible arise within him. In this lies the dignity of daring. Thus, the aim of practice is not to develop an attitude which allows a man to acquire a state of harmony and peace wherein nothing can ever trouble him. On the contrary, practice should teach him to let himself be assaulted, perturbed, moved, insulted, broken and battered -- that is to say, it should enable him to dare to let go his futile hankering after harmony, surcease from pain, and a comfortable life in order that he may discover, in doing battle with the forces that oppose him, that which awaits him beyond the world of opposites. The first necessity is that we should have the courage to face life, and to encounter all that is most perilous in the world. When this is possible, meditation itself becomes the means by which we accept and welcome the demons which arise from the unconscious -- a process very different from the practice of concentration on some object as a protection against such forces. Only if we venture repeatedly through zones of annihilation, can our contact with Divine Being, which is beyond annihilation, become firm and stable. The more a man learns whole-heartedly to confront the world that threatens him with isolation, the more are the depths of the Ground of Being revealed and the possibilities of new life and Becoming opened."

AVOIDING ONLY ONE THING

All your life, you have been trying to
AVOID Only One Thing...

All your life, you have been RUNNING
Away from Only One Thing...

You have been running Away from yourself.

You have been running away from... the
Emptiness... the Infinite Emptiness,
the Empty Infiniti!

But, it catches you again and again...
and, it feels like your Death!

No identity, no knowledge, no future,
no hope...
no other...
no time...
no space...
no form...
no shape...

no other...

and you RUN Away!

...

On its Surface it feels so Dreadful!

...

You can not have any relationship with it...
you can not talk to it...

You that can have any relationship...
simply disappears...

you that can have anything ceases...

and, you RUN Away... it is the Very
question of survival!

...

You turn the TV on...
You browse through the newspaper that
you have read 5 times before...
You browse the Internet...

You think...
You day-dream...

You even read 'spiritual' books...
Ramana, Buddha and Jesus...
Adya, Tolle, Katie, Balsekar, Niz,
Osho, Krishanmurthy...

Anything but you want to avoid this
Utter Endless, Bottomless Emptiness!

...

But, NO matter how fast you RUN...
No matter how Far you run...
No matter where you Run to...

It CATCHES you Again...

...because, it is You...
the Infinite Emptiness!

...

It is not so MUCH that you are seeking
God, Truth, Self, Void, Emptiness, the
DIVINE...

It is more that the Divine is CHASING You...

...and your entire STRUGGLE, your
entire effort is about ...Running Away!

All of SPIRITUALITY...

All of meditation...

practice, sadhna...

is merely ABOUT developing the
Courage, the Strength to Abide in THIS
Infinite Emptiness!
Surrender is merely a merely the
surrender to this inevitability...
Surrender to your Ultimate Reality...

Surrender to your ONLY Reality...

The Emptiness Infinity...

...

It is the Surrender of the effort...
surrender of the struggle...
surrender of the Running Away!

Because, in reality... you can NOT
really Run Away!

You can NOT really run Away from ...
what is essentially yourself!

the Only Self!

...

The UNDERSTANDING is the name of
seeing this reality...
Seeing the root of running away...

Seeing the futility of running away...
and, once you have TRULY Seen it...
...the Surrender MUST Happen!

Surrender to the Ultimate Reality!

Surrender to the Eventuality...

Your Death... the beginning of Eternity!

2 Columbus Circle Underway

Are we the only ones who are wondering why everyone suddenly loves this building? Where were the études before someone suggested they make the building, like, useable. I understand the argument about the "turning point in Modernism", but I am left with an unshakeable feeling that this is the same kind of reactionary preservationist talk that's resisting tearing down a mundane 1920's parking garage on West Charles Street.

The earlier versions of this project left us uninspired. However, the rendering above gives us hope that the building will be a better object at the intersection of Broadway, West 59th Street, and Central Park West than the lollipop building is. And Mr. Cloepfil appears to be taking more design risks as the project moves forward, a startling contrast to WTC, which is becoming more safe and annoyingly boring as the project continues.

Serenity: The Outlaw's Spirituality

On the planet Haven, a desperate Shepherd Book (Ron Glass) delivers a sermon that includes this line: “It doesn’t matter what you believe, just so you believe.”
This is the world created by Joss Whedon in the new science-fiction western Serenity. Whedon created the TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel and is directing the upcoming movie Wonder Woman. Although Serenity is based on a short-lived TV series called FireFly, it’s not necessary to have been a fan of the original show to enjoy the movie.

Serenity is the most provocative and entertaining sci-fi movie since The Matrix, and it rivals Star Wars in its spiritual and mythic sophistication. In The Matrix, life presents us with the option of taking the blue pill or the red pill. We must choose between conventional reality or a deeper, darker, unsettling truth that offers traumatic discoveries, precious little hope, and no guarantee of a happy ending.

In Star Wars, life presents us with the option of joining a fascist Empire that controls reality and manipulates the dark side of the Force to maintain its own hegemony, or join a rebel Alliance that despite its spiritual inclination towards the Force must fight its way through battle after battle like Wild West outlaws on the run.

Whedon’s Serenity takes a huge interest in spirituality and offers an unconventional approach that should resonate with many gays and lesbians. Serenity’s is a message for all trailblazers of new spiritual territory in times when the price of being a pioneer is enough to make you an outlaw.

Captain Mal Reynolds (Nathan Fillion) heads a small crew on a Millennium Falcon-like ship called Serenity. The name is symbolized in a new language that blends old English with Chinese. The newest member of their crew, a 17-year-old girl named River Tam (Summer Glau) is a schizophrenic psychic formerly in the custody of the Alliance, and they’ll stop at nothing to execute her.

It makes sense logically for the Serenity crew to abandon the girl out of self-interest, but Mal struggles with the heavy moral and spiritual weight of the decision. He must wonder at the cost of saving one human life. Must he give up everything he has left--his life, ship, and crew? Does he even care what secrets River Tam holds that the Alliance seeks to squelch?

Mal will need faith in something if he is able to see a reason for not sending the hunted River packing, even if she is a psychologically tortured young girl. His crew will need faith, too, even if their Higher Power is none other than confidence in Mal. Faith is the true object of the quest in this space odyssey.

The idea that a single human person is of sacred worth is anathema to the powers that be. The fascist Alliance not only controls the population politically, but through horrifyingly "meddlesome" procedures that deny individual human dignity and choice. The cannibalistic Reavers that patrol the edge of space are even more barbaric.

The world of the future has become so spiritually polluted that it is no longer possible for people to behave in truly moral and humane ways. Belief has become totally irrelevant. In five hundred years, the new frontier of the Wild West is spirituality. Only rebels and outlaws can live close to truth to hear the beating pulse of morality and spirituality.

Shepherd Book said: “It doesn’t matter what you believe, just so you believe.” He added: “Why do you always assume I’m talking about God?” Shepherd’s advice shouldn’t be confused for a call to bring back that old time religion or some sort of wishy-washy moral or spiritual relativism. Shepherd is saying that we all need something important, worthy, and inspiring to believe in. We cannot afford to lose that without ceasing to be worthy of being called human.

Mal has already lost belief in God, religion, country, the law, and everything else. Even his belief in his job and crew have failed him. Mal needs to find a rebel’s faith. Outlaws aren’t content to search and discover a truth out there; they have to be willing to make their own truth, set their own law, and define their own boundaries.

The outlaw’s code of life must include a principle that elevates comradeship or friendship to a family-like status. It must insist that no member of the crew should ever be left behind, even as the crew faces bloody and sometimes death-dealing battles.

Of all the tasks vital for an outlaw’s spirituality, none is greater than wrestling with serenity itself. Mal and his crew converse with carefully chosen language that prevents any individual from getting too hot. When one angry crewman says, “You’re disturbing my calm,” then another asks if he wants to leave the room. He goes quietly.

Late in the film, a recorded message is discovered, a sort of dark creation myth in a time capsule. It explains aspects of history (including the origin of the Reavers) that are so disturbing that none, not even the psychotic River, had dared to imagine the full truth.

Belief is only possible in a universe that makes sense, one that is fundamentally coherent and hospitable to life. The Serenity creation story affirms the possibility of belief and inspires faith in the sacred worth of each person. But it also shakes our old values to the core, including any beliefs in the salvific power of serenity.

Aristotle once said: "Anybody can become angry, that is easy; but to be angry with the right person, and to the right degree, and at the right time, and for the right purpose, and in the right way, that is not within everybody's power, that is not easy."

The overarching question with serenity is not if or when, but how. It’s not whether you take the blue pill or the red pill. It’s not whether you join the Rebels or the Empire. The question is how you balance calm, passion, and fierce anger.

The Heaven of Animals

Here they are. The soft eyes open.
If they have lived in a wood
It is a wood.
If they have lived on plains
It is grass rolling
Under their feet forever.

Having no souls, they have come,
Anyway, beyond their knowing.
Their instincts wholly bloom
And they rise.
The soft eyes open.

To match them, the landscape flowers,
Outdoing, desperately
Outdoing what is required:
The richest wood,
The deepest field.

For some of these,
It could not be the place
It is, without blood.
These hunt, as they have done
But with claws and teeth grown perfect,

More deadly than they can believe.
They stalk more silently,
And crouch on limbs of trees,
And their descent
Upon the bright backs of their prey

May take years
In a sovereign floating of joy.
And those that are hunted
Know this as their life,
Their reward: to walk

Under such trees in full knowledge
Of what is in glory above them,
And to feel no fear,
But acceptance, compliance.
Fulfilling themselves without pain

At the cycle's center,
They tremble, they walk
Under the tree,
They fall, they are torn,
They rise, they walk again.

This old abandoned ruin of a fortress

now hosts the ghosts of bewildered
roaming animals who may have paused here
one night some life ago,
long after the former tenants
had dropped to mud and dust.

Dazzled by the interplay of clouds
and light through the crumbling battlements,
they must surely have been startled when
the sudden shaft of moonlight
pierced their skins
and buried itself
between their eyes,
silently exploding.

They gather so expectantly around me now,
purring softly and waiting in serene
anticipation for the same shock
of light to strike me, perhaps
so I might join with them
in their bedazzlement, unaware
I have already been speared
at the heart,

nor did I survive
that silvery devastation.

Nobody here gets
out alive.

Fear would have us believe
we are the victim -- the one
that seems to be implicated in the midst
of experience by the evidence of experience --
and for that one, in each moment,
there seems to be a choice:

Love, or fear.

There really is no choice,
hence it is called

The Choiceless.

The choice was made before
the world was born.

Ah, see –

all flows fearlessly
back and forth in the heart,
sometimes still as a calm limpid pool,
reflecting the moon in its waters,
sometimes a torrent
that tears hearts
to pieces –

one only knows by
drowning.

Let the world see,
let everybody see
what becomes of the heart
that no longer resists
going

r.

It's more than enough beauty,
kind enough to ease the terror, to
swallow whole
the whole world's tears.

To love or fear –
that's the test.

At the core
the heart knows best.

Open your eyes
and you will see,

division's the malignancy.

Conflicted mind's
a hurtful thing,
obscuring songs
our love would sing.

Let the healing begin within,
this is a war
nobody wins.

Give up the fight
before it begins,
why struggle with
your own best friend?

Our nature is
to be at peace,
to know ourselves,
to let strife cease.

Only we can liberate
the differences
that we create.

There is no truth
more plain than this --

there is no other we can meet
that you can't hug and
I can't kiss.

Imagine space itself
reaching into its own invisibility
for some light with which
to form
etheric masks
of momentarily appearing shapes
that you and I in turn assume to be
ourselves, momentarily forgetting
we are that space.

That's the rascal play
of living light --

it hides itself in darkness
just to magnify the bright.

That flame of outrageous yearning,
burning like a molten ball of iron
deep within the belly,
cannot be assuaged by wise words
or earnest wishes.

It is impervious to affirmations
of sincere intent, or prayers
to any childhood deities lurking
in the hopeful fantasies
of soul salvation.

The greater the resistance,
the hotter that brazen ball blazes.

Whichever way you turn,
it looms before you like an avalanche
about to happen, a sheer
wall of wailing flame.

You can't advance,
you can't retreat.

Standing still,
you will be torched.

All strategies are
doomed to crispy bits
of singed and smoking cinders, yet
in this broken-open humility,
hovering over the ruined battlefield of the soul
like a mercifully cool shroud of true peace,
acceptance envelops each and every weary warrior,
the struggle is at last
laid to rest,
spirit exhales,
the dead rejoice.

SHORT & SILENT & A BIT KINKY

THE NEOMUET

MANIFESTO

I am the short film, from the Cinema family. My species is ART.

I am the step before the red carpet, the one we sweep under the rug.
My big brother the full feature looks down on me and turns his back.
I try to remind him that I came to life before he did but that is a time he has long forgotten.
So have you, my dearest film apprentices and movie makers.
Your memories are blurred and sometimes, even out of sight.
You want to tell stories through cinema, without knowing the story of cinema.

Filmmaker screenshotFlorian Quittard curates this cabinet of filmed curiosities, or "Neomuets" -- short, black-and-white, silent films, rife with title cards, creaky background music, and actors with oversized emotions. By definition, the films are moody and atmospheric. Witness the existential marionette piece "The Shadow Who Fell in Love," or the decidedly grim Nazi's last supper in "Auf Wiedersehen." But they can also be unashamedly goofy, as in "Richard III." They remind us of David Lynch's "Eraserhead" or the creepy, old-but-new work of Guy Maddin. What's more, Mr. Quittard accepts submissions. With all the high-tech gadgetry available today, there's no reason you can't write, star in, and direct your own silent film. So go ahead, create a quiet masterpiece.

THE MODERN JAPANESE HOUSE

Picked up The Japanese House: Architecture and Interiors a few years ago and found it an excellent source for visuals of the sparest of Japanese houses and furnishings. Very little text leaves plenty of time to immerse in masterful photography. A favorite of mine. But here's a new release, bigger and better.

Just found this, a new Japanese house book: The Modern Japanese House, yesterday, so made a trip to the local Borders and very much liked what I saw. There are five chapters; Tiny Houses, Inside/ Outside, Multi Generation Houses, Work/Play, and Vacation Houses. Architects featured include Kazuyo Sejima, Jun Aoki, Shigeru Ban, Hitoshi Abe, Shuhei Endo, Nobuaki Furuya and Hiroshii Nakao. Hardcover, 240 pages, 220 color images. Beautiful and spare.
