I have eaten

the plums

that were in
the icebox


and which

you were probably

saving

for breakfast

Forgive me
they were delicious
so sweet
and so cold

William Carlos Williams was born in Rutherford,
New Jersey, in 1883. He was a practicing doctor, and a
principal poet of the Imagist movement, which stressed
precision of imagery, and clear, sharp language.
